Frequently asked questions.

What are the SAFETY Requirements?

The Shetland Race is a regatta that follows category 3 for offshore sailing with a liferaft. The complete equipment list and requirements can be found at: World Sailing Associations website here:

One of the crew members must also have completed the World Sailing RS Safety Course, which is organized by the Rescue Society, primarily in Horten, but it will also be set up in Bergen if there are enough participants. The course is scheduled for the weekend of March 22nd and 23rd, 2025.

Here are the links to the course:

Is it possible to participate without my own boat?

Participants who do not own their own boats are encouraged to reach out to our Facebook page. This platform serves as a great resource for connecting with potential boat owners in need of crew. Join the conversation, share your sailing experience, and you might just find the perfect opportunity to be part of this exciting event!

In fact, we have a dedicated Facebook-group for announcing and organizing crew here.

You can also find this group from our Official Facebook page.

Where can i find practical information about my stay in lerwick?

Lerwick Port Authority on Shetland issues a Yacht Pack information folder which contains a lot of useful information. The most recent edition is linked here. It is not all relevant to the Race as the port charges and electricity charges are paid on behalf of entrants into the Race - but there may be some items of interest and useful numbers for practical items. It will be updated in advance of the 2025 season.

http://shetland.org/ is another source for useful information as visitor to the country.

This website will also publish suggestions on interesting things to do while regenerating and enjoying Shetland on our resting days, so stay tuned.

Is it possible to only participate on one leg?

You are most welcome to join the race on only the leg from either Bergen to Lerwick only or the return leg to Bergen. The requirements for participation is still the same as for joining both legs, and you have to give notice to our Race Officer in due time before start, about your intentions. Any tracker or other devices handed out on the registration can be returned or picked up at the Race Office in Lerwick.
